EFFECTIVE LEARNING

Effective Learning
To give all children the best opportunities for developing effectively their knowledge and understanding of the world, practioners need to give particular attention to
- Activities based on first hand experience that encourage exploration, observation, problem      solving, prediction, critical thinking, decision-making and discussion.
- An environment with a wide range of activities, both indoors and outside, that stimulates children’s interest and curiosity.
- Opportunities that help children to become aware of, explore and question issues of differences in gender, ethnicity, language, religion and culture and of special educational needs and disability issues.
- Adult support in helping children communicate and record orally and in other ways.
- Supplementary experience and information for children with sensory impairment.
Areas of Continuous Provision
In the classroom we should set up areas which enable children to practise, develop and consolidate those skills which have been taught. These provide good opportunities in which to observe knowledge and understanding of the World. This should involve
- Being able to work with a range of materials and resources which are clearly labelled and easily accessible. For example in a workshop or workstation area.
- Time to return to activities to extend and consolidate their own learning.
- Adult support to effectively move their understanding on.
- A range of good resources which children are familiar with, and which are demonstrated by adults.
- Resources which include; toys, equipment, resources and the environment. Storage of resources enables independent access.
- Construction, water, sand, creative, writing, imaginative, outdoor, investigative, malleable materials, ICT, small world, box modelling, puzzles and games areas.- ‘Science’ boxes based on a theme.
- Finding out areas.
- Outdoor investigation boxes.
- Use of digital camera by children.
